garethdaine So how does Aura compare to the more popular PHP frameworks? What advantages does it have over them?16:13
joelclermont joined16:17
agentile_ I would say the major pro is that it is more a collection of libraries that are decoupled16:20
and can be singularly used in and of themselves16:20
To me, that is very appealing16:20
Using only what is needed.16:20
agentile_agentile16:23
garethdaine Don't most new Frameworks do that too, like Laravel16:39
Not sure though really16:40
simensen I think that saying Aura is decoupled in the same way that Laravel, Symfony, Zend, etc are would be fighting words in here. ;)16:45
garethdaine Haha, Oh really. How come?16:46
simensen garethdaine: out of curiosity, what are you looking for here? reasons to use aura over other projects? are you just curious about aura? what other frameworks have you worked with?16:46
joelclermont i can't comment on Laravel since I've never tried to use it in a decoupled fashion, but trying to use Symfony decoupled is almost impossible. ZF 1 was better (haven't played with ZF2) but still had lots of dependencies16:46
Aura is what I've been looking for a long time16:46
i don't mind coupling in all cases, i've built plenty of symfony and zf full stack apps16:47
garethdaine Got to say I'm pretty framework agnostic. I have favourites obviously but they're just tools to get a job done. I'm not biased myself.16:47
Anyway, yeah. I'm just curious about Aura16:47
joelclermont but when i'm trying to modernize a legacy codebase, it's a lot more painful to do it when the framework you're trying to slowly move to is very coupled16:47
simensen garethdaine: there have been a lot of articles going back and forth on how aura is different in how it is decoupled. its components are completely standalone and don't require anything else. so you can just pick one component and that is all you need.16:47
garethdaine I've used lAravel 3, 4, CodeIgniter, Cake and Zend16:47
joelclermont garethdaine: i'm like you. lots of tools in the bag, pick the right one for the job at hnd16:48
garethdaine Exactly joelclermont16:48
simensen joelclermont: i think it definitely depends on which components you are trying to use from symfony and what you're trying to do with them. some of them are very inincestuous. :)16:48
garethdaine I'm really liking Laravel 4 at the moment but I want to try Aura out16:48
Just come in to see what people like about it really16:49
What's the CLI like for Aura? Also, does it have migrations?16:50
Also, does Aura have an ORM?16:51
joelclermont garethdaine: no i don't think so. i'm new to it, but i haven't seen anything like an ORM16:52
i use the sql and marshal packages16:52
garethdaine :-( That's a pitty16:52
Not a deal breaker though16:52
Looks like you can pretty much easily add one16:52
Anyway, thanks for the info. Gonna give it a try at the weekend. :-)16:58
pmjones: What's your Twitter matey?16:58
pmjones garethdaine: oh sorry man, stepped away17:06
simensen garethdaine: same as his IRC handle. :)17:06
pmjones i'm @pmjones17:06
thanks simensen17:06
simensen pmjones: no problem :)17:07
pmjones garethdaine: on "what makes aura different", the guys at phpmagazin asked me that last year, and i posted the interview here: http://paul-m-jones.com/archives/415217:08
