jungejason CareBear\: it works! Thanks a lot!00:49
Araxia_ tabakhase: when i've needed to do that, i've just made a separate clone and moved its .git directory into that existing folder.00:49
you have to be a bit careful about how you interpret the diffs after you've done that, though.00:50

captainramen argh. somene over here totally messed up the history on the public repo01:26
all the commit authors are different though. is it possible to tell who pushed certain commits upstream?01:27
cehteh why do you let someone mess that up?01:28
captainramen i didn't! everyone has push permissions to the repo though01:28
looks like they did some wierd rebasing and did not bother to look at wha they were committing01:28
cehteh pushing cant mess history up unless he forcibly altered history and has permission to do so01:28
which is really bad and insecure01:29
you can disable that (only allow fast forwards)01:29
captainramen i think i mispoke. they didn't go back in time and mess something up, they just pushed a really wierd set of commits up01:29
cehteh and you should do so01:29
captainramen it is01:29
cehteh ah ok01:29
captainramen but it can be overriden with git force --push01:29
cehteh nope .. the server side will reject that if configured properly01:30
captainramen this is github btw. i don't have permissions to mess with the 'central' repo01:30
cehteh ah01:30
captainramen so is it impossible to tell who actually did this?01:30
cehteh dunno how github handles and configures this01:30
captainramen i have my suspicions but they are just that01:30
cehteh heh01:31
you have only that central repo?01:32
and only one work branch there?01:32
captainramen basically i am the only person around here who believes in testing. if they had bothered to run the test suite they never would have committed01:32

captainramen this is really wierd. the commit in question has me as the author but it is in fact the opposite of what I committed with that message01:37
deleting a file instead of creating one01:37
cehteh thats strange .. maybe a revert .. with edited message?01:37

jast rrrreimer: oh. actually, are you sure that the bare repository even has local copies of remote branches?10:51
rrrreimer I want to track the commits which B is ahead of C10:52

jast yeah14:52
I use them to split my collection of steam games across several drives14:52

SerajewelKS yeah, that's not going to work, because there's also a straightforward A/W branch that doesn't need any of this special treatment14:52
jast anyway, I think there's no good way to do this with git-svn14:52
SerajewelKS that's a shame14:52
on linux i'd just clone the repo elsewhere and symlink the directories i need into another structure14:53

sitaram yup. 'git push <name> <list of branches>' of course; else it'll go to origin16:41
alt^255 I'm concerned about the existance of previous git history in the local repo16:41
coming from another machine, I've tried it before and it complained something about being a different hostname16:42

Neurotiquette canton7: What happens if I cherry pick this commit, and then decide I want to go ahead and get the commits underneath it too? Will a normal git merge suffice?18:57
canton7 takahiro, you know vaguely how git works, don't you? (go read git for computer scientists if not and you want a quick course). it's a directed acyclic graph -- each commit (the "child) is based on a single other commit (the "parent), with the exception on merges. since each commit only holds a reference to its parent (not to its child / children), the tips of these "branches" (chains of commits) are marked by branch refs (eg "milestone-2").18:57
in gitk, the blobs are commits. the line shows the parent/child relationships between commits18:58
so "Added UTF header and about page" is a child of "added survey banner", and "fixed html/css errors" and the milestone-2 merge are both children of "added UTF header and about page"18:59
when you do a merge, you're taking the changes from one branch and merging them into another branch18:59
