Gray Hello Everyone, I have a very strange issue, a file has changed by commits like c4,c3,c2,c1(latest commit comes first), `git log -1 path/to/file` results c4, after merged a commit, the `git log -1 path/to/file` results c3. And changes belongs c4 gone away!07:53

igemnace you didn't checkout a different branch during that period? what command did you use to run the merge07:54
houami left07:54
Gray igemnace: thanks for your reply, no, I didn't change branch during that period, just use normal merge `git merge BRANCH`.07:55
`git merge -s ours` can avoid that07:56

igemnace mind posting a !situation08:00
gitinfo Please post the url returned by `git log -n 20 --all --graph --format="%h %p %d %s" | curl -F text=@- https://upaste.de/` to give us an idea about what your situation is (increase the -n argument if your problem is more complex than 20 commits can explain)08:00

is there any way to represent within git that the two files have a common history, and are really "branches" of each other, or maybe even support "cherry-picking" a patch from on top of file A to file B or vice versa?15:41

rafasc you can use branches then.16:00
catern sure16:00
if file A was in a separate repo, certainly I could use branches, so what if file A isn't? I guess I just wonder, maybe there's a hack on git subtree here?16:01
rafasc But if you want some changes applied on both sides, you'll have to merge back and forward, or cherry-pick, which isnt ideal.16:01

Zexaron I would expect git would disallow special chars like / in branch names22:21
grawity no, /-separated hierarchy is a standard feature of Git branches22:21
rafasc ^22:21
grawity `man git check-ref-format` documents a whole lot of restrictions, but '/' is not one of them22:22
gitinfo the git-check-ref-format manpage is available at https://gitirc.eu/git-check-ref-format.html22:22
Zexaron so it does have a purpose, didn't knew that22:22
dcpc007_ left22:22
rafasc The best it could do would be to give a warning...22:22
Zexaron At least that indeed22:22
rafasc I find that most of the local branches that have names matching remote/branch are created by mistake.22:22
grawity it's not a software feature (i.e. there is no actual hierarchical relationship between branches)22:22
but why disallow it just because22:22
