brandoneliza This is my git diff. https://paste.opensuse.org/view/raw/9fa355d709:06
at the end of the line changed there is a ^M it does not show up in my text editor.09:07
Any idea what this could be09:07
foul_owl joined09:07
brandoneliza I am trying to remove it09:07
iomari891 joined09:07
ikke That's a \09:07
\r line ending09:07
brandoneliza ok but why is it not showing for other lines?09:10
ikke Most likely because that's the only line that has that line-ending?09:10
brandoneliza probably09:10
I think my text editor suddenly started doing it hmm09:11
pyeverything joined09:15
brandoneliza ikke, do you know an editor where iI can remoe the \r09:16
ikke with vim you can set fileformat=unix09:16
brandoneliza I used dos2unix09:16
ikke if you have a linux system, you can also use dos2unix09:16
right09:16
pretty_dumm_guy joined09:16
brandoneliza dos2unix corrects it but the diff become the whole file09:17
I think i had made this file on windows09:17
ikke That means that all lines are affected09:17
umbramalison joined09:17
brandoneliza yes. If I use unix2dos on the file09:17
the git diff has only two ^M09:17
so I think on those lines there might be a \r\r]n09:17
ikke It only shows it for lines that have changed09:17
brandoneliza so I think on those lines there might be a \r\r\n09:17
so I was wondering if my understanding is right and I can remove these stray \r's while keeping the windows line endings09:18
yeah its pretty funny09:20
pyeverything left09:20
ikke You can try to replace \r\r with \r09:20
brandoneliza reverting I think creates a new commit. Can I remove the latest commit without reverting keeping history09:22
ikke git reset --hard HEAD~ will remove the last commit from the current branch (beware, it will also remove uncommitted changes)09:23
note that if you had pushed that commit already, you would need to force push (with the rammifications that come with that)09:24
brandoneliza ikke, i ran that coomand the last commit is still there in git log09:25
I have not yet pushed09:25
ikke Did you include the ~?09:25
brandoneliza oh09:25
no09:25
didn't notice09:25
that worked09:27
:s/\r\r/\r09:27
hmm I get pattern not found09:28
wonder how to debug this line ending thing09:28
I tried editing the changes in vim this time09:29
still get those 2 ^M on the lines that changed09:29
I want the diff to be only those likes without the ^M09:30
I think I'll just use unix style line endings.09:33
srinidhi left09:33
brandoneliza I think when cloning on windows I should use that autocrlf thing I saw on stack09:34
I hardly ever use windows though09:34
carl- joined09:35
ikke You can set the editors to use linux line endings as well on windows09:36
brandoneliza yes I think it is when I forget that I goof up09:36
jiffe1 left09:37
brandoneliza I think if I open in notepad it will always use CRLF09:37
ikke Nowadays notepad does support LF, but not sure what happens when you save09:37
If you enable line-ending normalization, do use gitattribute files so that it's consistent09:38
brandoneliza I've kind off lost touch with windows.09:38
ikke, how do I normalise all files to unix style EOL's09:38
ikke dos2unix09:38
brandoneliza ok I think I normalised everything to uinx now.09:40
NOw I need to learn how to make git do it automatically.09:40
ikke echo09:40
echo "* text=auto" >>.gitattributes09:40
extor left09:41
jiffe1 joined09:41
brandoneliza ikke, will this normalise to \n irrespective of OS09:41
ikke yes09:42
brandoneliza cool.09:42
so I just need to commit this file and push it09:42
ikke, this * will work for subdirectories as well or only the root directory09:43
clime joined09:43
brandoneliza * text=auto09:44
ikke It's recursive09:44
brandoneliza ok09:44
thank you so much09:45
brandoneliza left09:48
tirnanog joined09:48
tirnanog left09:48
brandoneliza joined09:52
brandoneliza ikke, I was reading and someone had recommended against text=auto because git could guess wrong for an extension.09:52
The poster suggested using lines like "*.txt text"\n "*.js text"09:53
ikke brandoneliza: git is generally pretty good at detecting it09:53
Personally I have not come across a binary file that git thought was text-based09:54
brandoneliza here when you just use the word "text" does this mean all files of that extension will be normlised to \n09:54
ikke if you just set text, not text=auto, then yes09:54
You force it on09:54
brandoneliza ok09:55
ikke So you never want to do '* text'09:55
brandoneliza got it09:55
that would force binary files also to change09:55
ikke correct09:55
which will corrupt them09:55
brandoneliza yes09:56
ikke You have to decide whether you want to manually add attributes for all relevant extensions or rely on git detecting it09:56
brandoneliza yes I think that is what the poster decided on because once his files got corrupted09:57
ikke The way that git detects something is binary is whether there is a 0 byte within the first N amount of bytes09:57
carl- left09:57
brandoneliza by text=auto09:57
must be extremely rare09:57
ikke, I think dos2unix does the same thing09:57
as in it skipped image files smartly09:58
ikke You can use git ls-files --eol <filename> to see what git thinks about a file (and what attributes are set)09:58
brandoneliza I SEE A10:00
i/crlf w/crlf attr/text=auto sidebar/content-script-scratchpad.js10:00
kenanmarasli joined10:00
brandoneliza does this mean this is a windows EOL file still and that git will normalise that one with crlf instead of lf?10:00
ikke i/crlf is problematic10:00
gurkenglas joined10:01
brandoneliza I ran dos2unix on that file10:01
now I get a10:01
i/crlf w/lf attr/text=auto sidebar/content-script-scratchpad.js10:01
ikke But I guess you did not stage it?10:01

liberaider I am trying to understand why the top two commits here are listed in that order: https://github.com/curvefi/curve-dao-contracts/commits/master it looks like 3bee was committed BEFORE b041. Can anyone explain please?20:26

parsnip liberaider: why do you think it looks like 3bee was committed before b041?20:34
cdown left20:34
thebombzen left20:35
liberaider parsnip: if you look at the CommitDate you can see 3bee is CommitDate: Fri May 13 22:25:42 2022 +0000 and b041 is Fri May 13 22:26:46 2022 +0000, about a second later.20:35
You can hover over the date on the GitHub commits page to see full date.20:36

parsnip in Firefox?20:38
masber left20:38
liberaider Yes, that's what I use. Just hover your cursor over 'May 13' on the commit.20:39
Ah, well, not quite full, but full enough to illustrate the case here.20:39
Sorry, it's about a /minute/ later, not a second.20:39

parsnip not sure. but commit dates can be set arbitrarily20:42
rgrinberg joined20:42
liberaider Can they? You can edit that field?20:42
parsnip maybe git did it during a UI usage? or maybe they did it with a third party tool20:42
you can set it to 1970 if you want20:43
liberaider How is the ordering determined then, just by following the parents in the DAG/20:43
?*20:43
parsnip that's the funny thing about GitHub's choice to sort commits by timestamp20:43
ideally, you sort by parents first20:43
thiago left20:43
parsnip GitHub sorts by date first20:44
so you can have parent as a month later, and github will mess it up20:44
liberaider It looks like the revert commit is in the PR, but was added after the PR was merged..20:46
parsnip "looks like"20:47
i would just go by the parent relationship. "ignore" the dates20:48
Rashad left20:48
liberaider Basically my end goal is to save the commit log to a database "in order" (whatever that means), and have the ability to ask my database what the "most recent" commit is (according to the "order").20:49
I've been using CommitterDate and it has worked for millions of commits, but this particular set of commits has screwed up my logic.20:49

liberaider Continuing my guestion about saving commits to my own DB "in order"...21:18
(xpost from #github)21:18
ferdna joined21:18
liberaider I guess I could auto-increment each commit in my DB and just store is as `git log` gives it. I don't love the idea of using a surrogate key but maybe it's the pragmatic approach here. Does this sound reasonable?21:19
To elaborate, what I mean is to pull commits from `git log` (using some set of my own flags) and numbering each commit in the order it is printed.21:19
I know that `git log` ordering is subject to change, but this seems the most pragmatic thing I can do without actually following parents to determine order each time.21:20
If there is some data directly inside commit objects which can reliably be used to determine order, I would prefer that, but CommitDate and AuthorDate aren't reliable for it, and I don't know what else could be used.21:21
