Baniola joined07:55
Lope Problem is there's a merge conflict that occurs with the git stash pop, and I want it to automatically select the upstream (what I committed)07:55
but it seems like there's no option for that with git stash pop.07:56
So the best alternative appears to be to use `git stash branch` ?07:56

Guest15 Hello Buddies10:03
I want to set up a Git server that will serve the purpose of offline VCS and I'm reading Git Pro book for refence10:03

Guest15 It will be a Version Control System (VCS) server within my organization10:14
Being offline means that it is accessible only within local network10:14

redbool_ joined10:16

mvlabat Hi! I often stumble upon advices to set `core.compression` to `0` when dealing with fetch errors like these:14:13
```14:13
fetch-pack: unexpected disconnect while reading sideband packet14:13
fatal: early EOF14:13
fatal: fetch-pack: invalid index-pack output14:13
```14:13
So I wanted to ask: does it actually work or are people shooting themselves in the foot by just disabling compression for local packs?14:13
Like, it doesn't seem that it should affect the behaviour of a git server on how it chooses a compression level of packs that it uploads to clients.14:13
For example: https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/48568#discussioncomment-999817814:13
Is my suspicion right and it's just luck (due to improved network conditions) + magical thinking about this config? Thanks14:13

selckin seems like it helps when there is a broken http proxy14:20
talukara youre right to be suspicious. setting core.compression to 0 disables compression for the local repository but doesnt directly influence how the server sends packs or handles compression during a fetch.14:21
what likely happens is that reducing the compression might reduce the processing load on your local machine, making it less likely to encounter timing-related issues on lower-powered hardware or in certain network conditions. however, this doesnt fundamentally solve the underlying network issues causing fetch errors like early EOF or unexpected disconnects14:22
in short14:22
it may seem like it "works," but its not really a solution.14:22
its more of a side effect of lighter network load or processing, combined with luck. a better approach would be to check for actual network issues, improve connection stability, or tweak Git's network settings (like `http.postBuffer`).14:22
Ishmael left14:22
selckin either git crashes, or the network connection is lost (can be all kinds of reasons, proxies, nat, firewalls losing connection tracking, cgnat)14:24
stats4647 left14:24
selckin why you also find like trickle in thos posts, to make sure there is always network traffic so nobody inbetween forgets about the connection14:25
wgrant joined14:25
selckin and with servers being small containers or vm now, git using too much memory server side and getting killed is very easy too14:27

mvlabat Sry, I'm not sure that my messages were actually sent (ircloggy doesn't list them), so I'll copy-paste them again:15:37
`http.postBuffer` also shouldn't affect anything if a repo is configured to use ssh, right?15:37
and thank you for the answers. I think it's unlikely that a load on a local machine can be often a concern here (with CPUs and amounts of RAM people usually have). And I think at the point when a client is still fetching/unpacking a pack from a server, there's no repacking involved (unless a `--keep` option was provided to the fetch command) where15:37
the compression config could have any effect15:37
So my impression is that `http.postBuffer` is likely useless if a remote is configured to pull/push over ssh, and `core.compression` is not only useless but also potentially harmful since it would make gc/repack commands save less space when compressing objects15:37

ELFrederich I have a repo that I cloned with --shared as it's a bare repo kept in sync with `rsync` from a Gitaly GitLab node. The bare .git directory is perfectly in sync right now but I get an error from the cloned repo when I run `git fetch` or `git show-ref`.19:33
wyclif joined19:33
ELFrederich A new clone of this repo doesn't have this issue, but the existing clone does.19:33
fatal: git show-ref: bad ref refs/tags/v4.1.0 (0123456789012345678901234567890123456789)19:34
merijn left19:37
ggGuest5 joined19:38
ikke ELFrederich: did you read the NOTE for the --shared option?19:40
Ishmael left19:44
ELFrederich ikke, I did... I'm just wondering where on earth that dangling ref would be coming from19:46
ikke ELFrederich: potentially it could have been deleted in the reference repo because it was no longer referenced19:47
while the cloned repo still has the reference19:48
merijn joined19:48
ELFrederich ikke, it seems almost the opposite. In the cloned (with --shared) repo when I do `find | grep 4.1.0` I see nothing, but when I do it on the bare source repo I see it under refs/tags19:48
wyclif left19:49
ELFrederich so if that v4.1.0 is dangling and a problem how does a freshly cloned (still using --shared) repo not complain? The old cloned repo complains19:49
ELFrederich actually has to run. Curriculum night at the school. I'll be back tomorrow. Sorry to post then disappear19:50

Skipp_OSX anybody here know Retcon app? Is it possible to get it to ignore case in repo/read settings from .gitconfig that does so?20:28
YuGiOhJCJ joined20:29
Skipp_OSX I want to try and use the software tool but my repo is too demanding for it. The tool acts as if it does not have the git config --global core.ignorecase false setting20:31

ferdinandyb Is there a way to read a cover letter from file for git-send-email? Or some git notes based magic that makes it easier to deal with sending a v(n+1) of a patch series with a coverletter?21:44
