sybariten OK so i'm having some file maintenance issues, most probably because I'm an eternal git noob00:24
jaredce joined00:25
mefistofeles sybariten: git is a mess, don't beat yourself too much :P00:25
sybariten I have a little repo of config files, there's a handful of them from linux and win . I was curious to see if one machine i had was "up to date" with files in general, so i went to this dir on that machine.00:25
mefistofeles: hehe. It's surely a bit hard to get into, for some people00:25
OK so i did git fetch origin, and then git diff origin/master, while standing there. Was asked for a PW with the fetch, no complaints when PW was given, so it's all good.00:26
The diff however gave me lots of red text for a file called executor.ini . Fine, i thought, this file exits online (bitbucket), but not locally on this machine. I copied it in, manually (I know, i know....) from another temporary dir on this specific machine, where i had done a clone at some recent time. So now i'm thinking, good, now i have this executor.ini in place, i shouldnt get all this red text00:28
when doing a diff. But i still do. May I be missing something important?00:28

Guest51 Hello, I have a question regarding submodules and "--reference". I set up a bare repository in "/git/.cache/super.cache" and added the "superproject" as well as all the submodule-repositories as remotes and finally issued a "fetch --all". Then, I cloned the "super-project" into "/git/super" via "git clone --reference /git/.cache/super.cache07:05
<url-to-remote>". Then, I initialized all the superproject's submodules via "git submodule init" and "populated the submodule repositories" via "git submodule update --reference /git/.cache/super.cache". Somehow this worked, and somehow it did not: there are some pack-files for each submodule (in .git/modules/.../objects/pack). If I delete them,07:05
all still works (because the reference is correclty set via .git/modules/.../objects/info/alternates) - why is this? is this a bug? shouldn't there be no pack-/object-files if every object is available in the reference repository?07:05

[twisti] osse / gsish: as to my question from yesterday, its about half a dozen individual improvements/fixes, but none of them are ready to commit, as they all still need documentation writeups, unit tests and so on. but i need all of them to work on the current actual task, since they affect the debug build process, so i cant/dont want to just stash them, and i dont want to have to skip them individually when staging changes for the current task08:20
i decided to put them all in a single WIP commit, which my hooks already prevent me from pushing, so my workflow will be to push them in a wip commit, work on my task, and when the task is done and committed to then revert the wip commit and drop it; leaving me with the changes in my work tree and a clean commit history i can then push before working on this wip stuff08:21
osse That is the best way to handle it that I can think of08:21
stats4647 joined08:22
osse Can also make more than one WIP commit, of course. I sometimes do that if I want to add some notes, keywords or comments for future me to read when it's time to do the needful08:23

i had the latter as a git alias and i was expecting the top most commit to be where HEAD is pointing to10:31
but there are many more commits on top of the one HEAD points to in the 2nd command10:31
but when i do a simple git log, it shows the commit HEAD points to10:31

git log --author="\(Benjamin\)\|\(Léopold\)|\(Jérémy\)|\(Antoine\)" --pretty=format:"%h%x09%an%x09%d%x09%s"10:55
But it only returns commit from Benjamin10:55
end-user hello git is a puce of junk because I have to re add a file after every change10:55
why does it do that10:55
don't you got anything better mason says milluins of us use it and I feel pity for them10:56
but mason said it in demeaning hubris at me10:56
wow how can you be such fools10:57
DevAntoine Can someone ban him please?10:57
lacrymology left10:57
end-user you shouldn't have to re add a file to append to it10:57
why does it do this10:58
I used git mv HOWTO HOWTO.txt then commit and push10:58
now everytime I append HOWTO.txt it makes me git add HOWTO.txt10:59
no listen10:59
I feel pity on physical workers even10:59
think about it. if your actions are repetetively collapsed vy the possibilities of how to use a junk tool11:00
repetetive actions rather11:00

ta71 osse: ohhhhh.. thank you so much!11:06
end-user you shouldnt have to re add a file to commit a change11:06
is that how you expect git to work?: like junk11:06
osse end-user: That is a design decision Git made and it's not going to change. You probably want to use git add -u or -a11:07
duxsco joined11:07
end-user in physics you get slave workers whose bones malform from havingvto use junk tools11:07
I pity on this11:08
it doesn't need to be this bad11:08
osse DevAntoine: I don't have an explanation for your problem, you can specify --author multiple times which is easier to deal with11:08

osse end-user: technically true, but commit -a will do that for you11:14
end-user it seemed like itvwas supposed to track changes11:14
what is -a11:14
osse commit -a is the same as add -u && commit11:15
ie. "add everything"11:15

gsish that end-user missed the introduction course? the part where it says early on that git is not subversion, and isn't some kind of subversion? makes you wonder ...19:57
(if that rant was real, then an introduction would have been due, if it wasn't a genuine concern, then well yeah whatever)19:58
am still wondering about twisti's approach, "not ready to push" was well understood and agreed on, but "not ready to commit"? sounds terrible to me and unnecessarily so, but I might have missed something19:59
seeing how there is amend, and squash and fixup, and interactive rebase, "can't commit" sounds strange to me20:00
thought the point of a version control tool was that you store what's important enough to keep and to reference later, or come back to20:01

arahael ikke: Indeed, and I've realised that the other terminal where it works has it set to :1, rather than :020:33
Oddly enough, setting that alone isn't sufficient.20:35
gsish guess it needs to be set (the DISPLAY env var?) to whatever the X server's address is20:36
arahael I think this tmux session must've been setup with a different instance of xwayland and the authorization crap has changed.20:37
And I never really realised beacuse it seems most of the stuff I run is using wayland already.20:37

FreeBDSM joined21:05
FreeBDSM hi. I'd like to init a local repo and then set a local 'remote' for backup reasons. I did it and I can now go to the 'remote' and 'git pull' from there, but why can't I 'git push' from the 1st copy?21:06
m0viefreak joined21:07
FreeBDSM I get error: `remote: error: refusing to update checked out branch: refs/heads/master` `remote: error: By default, updating the current branch in a non-bare repository is denied, because it will make the index and work tree inconsistent with what you pushed, and will require 'git reset --hard' to match the work tree to HEAD.`21:10
`You can set the 'receive.denyCurrentBranch' configuration variable to 'ignore' or 'warn' in the remote repository to allow pushing into its current branch; however, this is not recommended unless you arranged to update its work tree to match what you pushed in some other way.`21:13
I don't understand why this is not recommended21:16
BtbN Cause pushing to a non-bare repo in general is super odd21:18
And pushing to the branch that is checked out would lead to weirdness21:19
The remote client won't update the local working tree, so it'll just be randomly disconnected now21:19

FreeBDSM then how to organize a local backup for a local git?21:49
`cp` would do, but would be ~inefficient21:49
osse Use a bare repo?21:50
